I hope you had a happy Easter weekend! Here in Iceland the holiday starts on the Thursday (called Skírdagur) and lasts through Easter Monday (Annar í páskum). H and I had a wonderful extra-long weekend at home. It was sooooo nice just to have some time. Time to see friends, time to get things done, time to relax and just be.
I find I try to cram so much into my weekends that I often end up stressed out and getting very little actually accomplished. Then I beat myself up for not getting enough things done. Tania from Manusmade touched on this topic in a wonderful post she wrote a little while ago - she pretty much hit the nail on the head I think for many of us creative types trying to juggle "real life" with building our "dream life". There is always more to do and it often seems like there is never enough time get it all done.
So I made a conscious effort over this holiday to not try to do too much and to actually relax and enjoy the time off. And it worked! And I actually got MORE things done, including hosting a brunch for friends I don't see enough, getting the website looking a lot closer to what I want it to be, and making my first glazed ham (with help from H of course, who called his mom for her "secret recipe" - it was delicious!).
Sure it helped to have five days off in a row, but the lesson for me I guess is that it's more about balance than actual time, and not placing huge expectations on myself to "get things done". What's the point if you're so stressed you can't find the joy in what you're doing? Plus, it's hard to be creative if you're tired and miserable all the time. I am going to really try to actively apply this approach from now on, not just in my time off, but every day. Imagine all the things I'll get done!
